When we heard there was rain in Kyemula and in response to the prolonged period without rain we bought seeds for the more vulnerable community members so they could plant quicker growing crops which would be ready by Christmas

Thee following day everyone was out planting. Subsequently it has rained almost everyday, so the seeds are germinating well. This doesn’t mean that the problems are over because there is still a great shortage of food because the crucial maize crop failed – most people are now eating just one meal a day – so the food we provide at Jackie School is even more vital than usual.

Taking advice from the prescribing nurse who visited the school to hold the termly health clinic we have also purchased vitamin tablets for all the younger children, some of whom are seen here queuing for their turn to see the nurse.

We are extremely proud of these girls who had to work so hard to earn their place at university and who have justified our faith in them by working hard and getting great results.  We wish them well in the future.

Milton has reported that the rain has continued and that the newly planted crops are growing well – the farmers have been weeding their gardens and we are hopeful that they will be able to harvest in December and January. In the meantime, people are conserving the food they have, most are still eating just one meal a day but Milton is monitoring the situation and will be using the stored food to support those most in need as time progresses. It was Independence Day on 9th October which would usually be a day when people have a special meal, but Milton said it was a very quiet day in the village this year. Everyone is prioritising long term survival over a single day of celebration

Huge thanks to everyone who has already contributed following requests for support for the farmers in Kyemula, your generosity makes a big difference. While we won’t be having the usual Christmas Appeal this year we would love to be able to give the community a boost with some extra treats at Christmas to enliven the present dull diet of posho and more posho. Donations can be made via the usual bank accounts or via the donate button on the website. As in previous years I can provide certificates if you wish to donate as a ‘good gift’ – just email 3huganda@gmail.com with details of the recipient.
