The Student Leadership Council at Livingstone International University comprises five members, the president, and deputy, the prime minister, secretary general and speaker. The incoming vice president is our sponsored student, Godiva, pictured being sworn in
The new secretary general is our newest sponsored student, Joyce, pictured receiving the official file. Diana says she is very proud that of these five important posts two are filled by ‘our girls’! It is fantastic to see these young women taking on positions of responsibility alongside their studies.
At the beginning of the school holidays Milton organised a training and team building day for the teachers, with 2 external trainers bringing together the school management committee and some of the local school inspectors – the focus was on working with children, parents and the community, communicating well and loving their work. Milton said the trainers were impressed by the school set-up and commented that it equalled many they have seen in Kampala.
Earlier this year we shared Sylvia’s sad story – but now there’s better news. After the breakdown of relationships with her family and continued harassment from her ‘grandfather’ Zeu decided that Sylvia and Aggie Karen needed somewhere safer to live. Zeu’s mother has kindly agreed to foster them and both are flourishing. Sylvia and Zeu’s mother don’t speak quite the same Ugandan language so have been managing with limited Kiswahili although Sylvia is fast adapting and learning the different dialect. We will continue to support both girls until their longer term future is secured.
This is Milton’s latest update on this year’s crops, ‘Carrying on their heads the harvested beans...
....then the brown ones are beans drying. Some have hanged on trees to dry due to too much rain day and night'
. Finally the stage the maize has reached and we believe by beginning of June people will begin eating. Compared to past years people could only begin eating maize towards end of July.’
Term has begun at Jackie School – pictured are our 24 Primary Leaving Exam candidates who will sit the exams in November – six of them are sponsored children. Each candidate has to pay approximately £12 to cover the administrative costs of the exams – whilst Jackie School can just about afford for this for many rural families and schools it is impossible which means the children can’t gain access to secondary education or prove their abilities to potential employers.
As May comes to an end so does our Hop, Skip, Step together fundraising challenge – thanks to everyone who has taken part and donated. Whilst we don’t have a final total yet we are very pleased with progress so far – but would welcome any additional donations to enable us to achieve our target of providing each child at Jackie School with a new pair of shoes. Donations can be made our Give As You Live page:https://donate.giveasyoulive.com/charity/hours-of-human-happiness
